illnesses of the mind that can affect thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and the relationships of a person
Stigma
negative label or mark of shame; stereotype
Phobia
is an exaggerated and irrational fear of someone or something
OCD
an anxiety disorder that causes recurrent intrusive obsessions which lead to compulsions
PTSD
is triggered by a terrifying event - either experiencing it or witnessing it
Hypochondria
the irrational fear of having an illness or any kind of chronic disease
Dissociative Identity Disorder
an individual develops multiple personalities in reaction to trauma
Manic/Depressive - Bipolar
involves roller coaster like mood swings which include depressive lows and extreme highs
Clinical Depression
mood disorder caused by a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest - affects how one thinks or feels
Schizophrenia
a severe chronic disorder that affects how a person acts, feels, and behaves, and may act like they have lost touch with reality
Borderline Personality
diagnosed by symptoms of unstable moods and can include self-image issues, difficulty managing emotions and behavior, and unstable relationships
Anorexia
an eating disorder characterized by a strong desire to lose body mass and refusal to consume calories
Bulimia
serious, potentially life threatening eating disorder - people will secretly binge then purge to get rid of extra calories
Tourettes
disorder involving repetitive movements or unwanted sounds and cannot be easily controlled
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
constant and excessive worrying and nervousness with no clear cause or reason that a person feels everyday
Dementia
caused by a brain injury or disease and effects memory, personality, and reasoning
Psychiatrist
physician who diagnoses and treats, can prescribe medication
Clinical Psychologist
professional who diagnoses and treats but cannot prescribe medication
Counselor
works with people with personal and educational matters
Social Worker
provides guidance and treatment in mental hospital, clinic, or family service agency

focuses on changing unwanted behaviors through rewards and reinforcements
Cognitive Therapy
identify and correct distorted thinking patterns, feelings, and behaviors that can be destructive
