Exteroceptors
Sensory receptors that detect stimuli from outside the internal environment, such as pressure and temperature.
Interoceptors
Sensory receptors that monitor internal body conditions, like blood pressure and pH levels.
Proprioceptors
Receptors that provide information about body position and movement by detecting muscle tension and joint position.
Mechanoreceptors
Sensory receptors that respond to mechanical pressure or distortion, involved in sensing touch, vibration, and sound.
Thermoreceptors
Receptors that detect changes in temperature, both internal and external.
Chemoreceptors
Receptors that respond to chemical stimuli, such as those that detect odors and tastes.
Nociceptors
Pain receptors that are activated by damaging stimuli and are responsible for the sensation of pain.
Special senses
Senses that have specialized organs and systems dedicated to specific stimuli, such as vision and hearing.
General senses
Senses that are more widely distributed throughout the body and include touch, temperature, and pain.
Olfactory system
The sensory system responsible for the sense of smell, bypassing the thalamus and sending signals directly to the brain.
Vestibulocochlear nerve
The cranial nerve responsible for hearing and balance, comprising the cochlear and vestibular components.
