Constitution
The fundamental law of a nation or state that establishes the character and basic principles of government.
Plebiscite
A direct vote in which an entire electorate is invited to vote on a particular proposal and can result in the adoption of a new law.
Malolos Republic Constitution
The first Philippine Constitution, adopted in 1899, recognized national and individual rights and had safeguards against abuses.
Sovereignty
The supreme authority within a territory, involving the ability to govern oneself without external interference.
Bicameral Legislature
A legislative body composed of two chambers or houses, such as the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Federalism
A proposed type of government where sovereignty is constitutionally divided between the national government and sub-divisional governments.
Rights of the People
Guarantees in the Constitution that outline the basic rights and freedoms entitled to individuals, which the government must protect.
Amendments
Formal changes or additions proposed to be made to a constitution.
Judicial Power
The authority vested in courts and judges to interpret laws, administer justice, and resolve disputes.
Legislative Powers
The capacities granted to a legislature, including the authority to make laws, declare war, and control the budget.
