what are the 4 most common indicators

litmus , universal , penolphalien , methyl orange

2
New cards

which indicator turns red in acid and yellow in alkali?

methyl orange

3
New cards

what does penopathalien turn to if it is an alkali

colourless

4
New cards

what different substances do alkali and acids release in water

alkali = releases OH- ions in water and acids release H+ ions in water

5
New cards

what is a neutralisation reactions equation

acid + alkali/base = salt + water

6
New cards

apparatus used for titration

  • burette

  • conical flask

  • pippette

  • penophalien indicator

  • alkali

  • acid

7
New cards

titration method

  • add a measured volume of acid to the Burette

  • add a known volume of alkali and a few drops of penophalien indicator to a conical flask

  • hold the Burette over the conical flask and slowly add the acid to the solution

  • whilst adding , swirl the conical flask to speed up reaction

  • stop once solution turns pink ( acid)

  • repeat 3 times and calculate mean acid needed
