What did Mendel study
How characteristics where passed on between generations of plants
Describe both of his experiements
1.He crosses a tall pea plant with a dwarf pea plant which all produced tall plants
2.He crossed two of the tall offspring together which produced 3 tall 1 dwarf
What are characteristics determined by
Hereditary units and these are passed from parent to offspring unchanged, one from each parent which are either dominant or reccessive
why was his work not recognised
The heredity units known now as genes were not known about at the time by other scientists
Gene
A section of DNA that codes for a particular protein
Alleles
Different variations of the same gene
Phenotype
The physical characteristics of an organism
genotype
The combination of alleles that controls each characteristic.
homozygous
two copies of the same allele
HETEROZYGOUS
Two alleles of a gene are different
Dominant allele
always expressed
recessive allele
only expressed if two copies are present
Chromosome
Thread like structures of DNA carrying genetic information in the form of genes.
