Gas under pressure, may explode when dropped or punctured e.g. propane tank

Flammable material

Substances that ignite easily and burn quickly

e.g. gasoline

Oxidizing material

Substances that give off increased levels of oxygen, fire risk, keep away from combustible materials

e.g. oxygen tank

Harmful/fatal material

Can cause death and acute toxicity if mishandled, do not inhale, consume, or expose to skin

e.g. bleach

Health hazard

Can cause chronic health effects (disease, cancer, infertility, etc.)

e.g. lead

Harmful/irritant material

Causes less severe health issues (irritation, coughing, inflammation, etc.) but is generally treatable

e.g. perfumes

Explosive material

Can combust/explode if not handled properly, mixed, or dropped. Store properly, some substances must be stored away from light/heat, should be handled by professionals under safe conditions

e.g. nitroglycerine

Corrosive material

Can destroy/chemically react to materials and skin, can harm eyes and burn skin or lungs. Wear proper PPE (personal protective equipment)

e.g. ammonia

Biohazardous material

Can cause serious illness with viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Seek medical attention if exposed.

e.g. used needles (eg. infected with Hepatitis B)

Environmental hazard

Harmful substances which threaten aquatic life and can have potential toxic impacts on its surrounding environment
