Label the parts of the kidney
What is the renal cortex
A dark outer layer with the Bowman’s capsule, convoluted tubule and blood vessels (glomerulus) with blood coming from the renal artery and performs filtration
What is the medulla
Is the lighter internal middle layer Contains nephrons that form renal pyramids and also the loop of henle collecting duct and blood vessels
What is the pelvis
Funnel shaped cavity that urine is passed through on the way to the ureter
describe the movement of blood through the kidney nephron
Blood passes into the nephron by the afferent arteriole (supplied from renal artery).
Then splits into small dense network of capillaries called the glomerulus, surrounded by the Bowman’s capsule (cup shaped). When it passes through the glomerulus small molecules get filtered out and pass into the Bowman’s capsule (ultrafiltration)
Blood moves out of the glomerulus via the efferent arteriole
At the PCT useful molecules that get filtered out by mistake eg glucose are reabsorbed back into the surrounding capillaries = selective reabsorption
LOH produces a high concentration of solutes like Na+
DCT AND CD - water is reabsorbed from the fluid back into the blood and how much depends on the water potential of the blood at the time
