1
New cards

Water

it is the most earth-friendly cleanser and a fairly effective one.

2
New cards

Trisodium Phosphate

It is an excellent cleaner for jobs that soap and water can’t touch but is much less often used today because it harms the environment by promoting the growth of algae in water. A half tablespoon to a gallon of water will remove most dirt but when used in heavier concentration, it can cause harm to the surface since it is strong enough to remove paints.

3
New cards

Washing Soda

Also called sodium carbonate, it is a heavy-duty cleaner but somewhat toxic. It cuts grease, removes stains, disinfects, soften water, and may even open drains. Use about 1/8 cup to a gallon of water.

4
New cards

Borax

It is an earth-friendly alkali, but it can be toxic. It is an excellent freshener which is added to the laundry, deodorizer, and cleanser.

5
New cards

Bottled Ammonia

90% water and 10% ammonia is a good grease-cutter, wax stripper, and window cleaner.

6
New cards

Lye

It is a very strong alkali cleanser sometimes used to clean pipes. It is extremely powerful and very dangerous and should be handled with extreme care.

7
New cards

Lemon Juice and white vinegar

They are both environment-friendly, mild acids and effective cleansers. Vinegar is used more often because it is cheaper. They are used to wash windows, to cut grease, and to freshen the air.

8
New cards

Muriatic Acids

It is sometimes used as a cleanser for badly stained bathrooms or for brick fireplaces.

9
New cards

Baking Soda

Non-polluting, inexpensive baking soda is a generic, gentle abrasive which can be used in cleaning pots, counters, and porcelain fixtures.

10
New cards

Liquid scouring cleaners

These are rougher than baking soda and are not recommended for cleaning plastic countertops or wood, but can be used almost everywhere else, especially in the kitchen and in the bathroom.

11
New cards

Scouring Powder

This contains a natural abrasive plus soap or an alkaline salt. This is for very resistant stains because it is very strong.

12
New cards

Rubber Compounds

In order of coarseness, pumice is the strongest. These are used to rub away a spot on furniture. Pumice may also be used to remove bad stains form inside the toilet bowl.

13
New cards

Metal Polish

This is primarily composed of abrasives combined with cleaners and/or acids. Steel wool pads with soap are cheaper and more convenient for the kitchen. To keep it from rusting too quickly, store the pad in a plastic bag in the freezer or keep it in a clay pot.

14
New cards

Detergent

A powder or liquid that is used to clean clothes, dishes, and many others.

15
New cards

Superconcentrate

Used only in small amounts, but it costs more,

16
New cards

Powder

Fine for general wash; good for ground-in dirt and clay.

17
New cards

Combination

Detergent plus fabric softener or detergent plus color-safe bleach.

18
New cards

Light-Duty Liquid Detergent

For hand or machine washables, delicates, baby clothes, and lightly soiled clothing.

19
New cards

Dish Washing Liquid

For dishes and also for hand washables; not for machine use.

20
New cards

Lysol

It is a heavy-duty germicidal cleanser used in the bathroom and in the kitchen or any fixture that many people touch. Sanitizers containing phenol are toxic for humans and potentially fatal for cats.

21
New cards

Bleach

It is used to remove molds and mildew. Chlorine bleach makes white whiter but is not to be used for colored clothes. Chlorine is not a cleaning product.
