Pearl Harbor
On December 7th, 1941- Japan attacked the American Navy at
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii
War bonds
Helped raise money for the war. Buying would fund the war. Buying
these was an easy way to volunteer.
Victory gardens
These gardens helped ensure an adequate food supply for
troops and civilians. People in rural and urban neighborhoods would grow their
own food allowing farmers to grow more for the government and troops.
Rationing
Regulated the amounts of goods a consumer could buy. Coffee, food,
tires, gas, and clothing were regulated. Coupons were given to families based on
size.
Office of war information
It was responsible for the production of propaganda.
voice of America
Broadcasted overseas, intended to stir up distrust among
German, Italian, and Japanese leaders, to lower morale of enemy troops, and to
encourage their surrender.
Womens army corps
Women took clerical jobs in the military.
● Between 1941-1945, more than 6.5 million women went to work.
African American
1 million served. Created the Tuskegee Airmen. Their job was
to escort US bombers into drop zones.
Native americans
Military needed an unbreakable code to relay messages to
the Pacific. The Japanese could not figure out the Navajo language. No syntax
(the arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences in a
language.) and no alphabet. A Navajo solider code decode the messages in 20
seconds.
Mexican Americans
500,000 Latinos served in WWII.

Required Japanese Americans to relocate to internment
