Behavior that respects your own rights and beliefs while speaking up for yourself.

Cognitive Reappraisal
Reflecting on a situation and "reframing" it or putting a positive spin on it.
Circadian Process
A 24-hour cycle (dependent on time of day) that regulates cortisol and melatonin.
Homeostatic Process
A process dependent on sleep load; the longer you are awake, the higher the pressure to sleep.
Pineal Gland
A gland in the brain that produces melatonin to help maintain circadian rhythms.
Melatonin
A hormone that increases at night to signal the body it is time to sleep.
NREM Stage 1
Twilight sleep; transition from wakefulness to sleep where muscles relax.
NREM Stage 2
Brain waves get larger and eyes are no longer responsive to light.
NREM Stage 3 & 4
Deep sleep characterized by slow, large delta waves; most difficult to wake from.
REM Sleep
Rapid Eye Movement stage where vivid dreaming occurs and brain waves resemble a waking state.
Memory Consolidation
The process during sleep where the brain organizes and stabilizes new information.
