Procedure of inducing a heightened state of suggestibility

Does hypnosis count as a distinct state of consciousness?

Ideomotor, challenge, and cognitive-perceptual suggestions

What is ideomotor hypnotic suggestion?

Hypnotized to perform actions

What is challenge hypnotic suggestions?

Hypnotized to be unable to perform actions

What is cognitive-perceptual hypnotic suggestions?

Hypnotized to remember/forget or alter perceptions

What is dissociation theory?

Explains hypnosis as a unique state in which consciousness is divided

Ex. doing stuff on autopilot (here, whatever you’re doing is the hypnotist)

What is social-cognitive theory?

Degree to which beliefs and expectations contribute to increased suggestibility

Ie. you believe you are drinking alcohol, you will probably act drunk
It’s kind of like placebo

What is is hypnosis even useful for?

Medical treatments and acute pain relief

What was hypnosis originally used for?

Recovery of false memories

Can hypnosis be used as evidence in court?
