Variable
A symbol (such as x, y, or n) that represents a number whose value can change.
Substitution
The process of replacing variables in an algebraic expression with given numerical values.
Algebraic Expression
A combination of variables, numbers, and operation symbols without an equals sign, e.g., 3x + y - 8.
Evaluate
To calculate the numerical value of an algebraic expression after substitution.
Coefficient
The numerical factor multiplied by a variable, such as 7 in 7t.
Constant Term
A number in an expression that has no variable attached, e.g., the 12 in t + 12.
Parentheses (Brackets)
Symbols ( ) used to group parts of an expression and indicate which operations to perform first.
Order of Operations
The agreed-upon rules (PEMDAS/BODMAS) that determine the sequence in which calculations are performed.
Exponent (Power)
A small raised number indicating how many times the base is multiplied by itself, e.g., 5².
Square
Raising a number to the power of 2; multiplying the number by itself.
Cube
Raising a number to the power of 3; multiplying the number by itself twice more.
Square Root (Radical)
A value that, when squared, equals the given number, written with the √ symbol.
