Ampulla of Vater
The entry point of the common bile duct into the duodenum.
Sphincter of Oddi
A muscular valve that controls the flow of bile and pancreatic juice into the duodenum.
Mesenteric arteries
Arteries that supply blood to the intestines, delivering oxygen and nutrients to intestinal tissues.
RUQ (Right Upper Quadrant)
The area of the abdomen that includes the liver, gallbladder, and parts of the small and large intestines.

A surgical procedure where a portion of the colon is brought to the surface of the abdomen to create an opening for waste.
Hypogastric region
The lower central region of the abdomen, containing the bladder and reproductive organs.
Hypochondriac region
The upper lateral regions of the abdomen beneath the ribs.
Villi
Finger-like projections of the intestinal lining that increase surface area for absorption.
Microvilli
Tiny projections on the surface of epithelial cells that further increase surface area for absorption in the intestines.
IV fluid replacement
Intravenous administration of fluids to restore circulating blood volume and maintain organ perfusion.
Electrolyte shifts
Movements of electrolytes from the intestinal lumen into the peritoneal cavity, often leading to dehydration.
Laparoscopy
A minimally invasive surgical procedure to examine and operate on the abdomen.
