Interference definition
when one memory disturbs the recall of another.
Proactive interference
old memory affects recall of new.
retroactive interference
new affects recall of old memory.
McGeoch and McDonald
6 different groups had to learn different lists.
Found that most interference occurred when lists were similar. (supports interference)
Strength
real world application: Separating topics decreases interference and improves memory.
Schmidt et al: recall of streets, those who moved more had fewer recall (retroactive.)
Limitation
research like McGeoch and Mcdonald lacks ecological validity as people wouldnt be asked to recall words like that.
