ἣ δ᾽ ἄρα τὸν μὲν ἔλειπε, κιχήσατο δ᾽ Ἕκτορα δῖον Δηϊφόβῳ ἐϊκυῖα δέμας καὶ ἀτειρέα φωνήν:

and Athena left Achilles and came to godlike Hector, taking the form and tireless voice of Deiphobus.

ἀγχοῦ δ᾽ ἱσταμένη ἔπεα πτερόεντα προσηύδα:

Standing close by him she spoke winged words:

'ἠθεῖ᾽ ἦ μάλα δή σε βιάζεται ὠκὺς Ἀχιλλεὺς ἄστυ πέρι Πριάμοιο ποσὶν ταχέεσσι διώκων:

"Brother, swift Achilles is really pressing you hard,chasing you with his swift feet around the city of Priam;

ἀλλ᾽ ἄγε δὴ στέωμεν καὶ ἀλεξώμεσθα μένοντες.'

but come, let us take a stand and fight him off, holding our ground."

τὴν δ᾽ αὖτε προσέειπε μέγας κορυθαίολος Ἕκτωρ:

Then great Hector of the gleaming helmet spoke to her in reply:

'Δηΐφοβ᾽ ἦ μέν μοι τὸ πάρος πολὺ φίλτατος ἦσθα γνωτῶν οὓς Ἑκάβη ἠδὲ Πρίαμος τέκε παῖδας:

"Deiphobus, even before now you were much the dearest of my brothers to me, whom Hecuba and Priam bore as children;

νῦν δ᾽ ἔτι καὶ μᾶλλον νοέω φρεσὶ τιμήσασθαι, ὃς ἔτλης ἐμεῦ εἵνεκ᾽, ἐπεὶ ἴδες ὀφθαλμοῖσι,

but now even more am I minded in my heart to honour you,who have dared on my account, when you saw me with your own eyes,

τείχεος ἐξελθεῖν, ἄλλοι δ᾽ ἔντοσθε μένουσι.'

to come out from the city walls, though the others remain inside."

τὸν δ᾽ αὖτε προσέειπε θεὰ γλαυκῶπις Ἀθήνη:

Then the grey-eyed goddess Athena spoke to him in reply:

'ἠθεῖ᾽ ἦ μὲν πολλὰ πατὴρ καὶ πότνια μήτηρ λίσσονθ᾽ ἑξείης γουνούμενοι, ἀμφὶ δ᾽ ἑταῖροι,

"Honoured brother, our father and lady mother did indeed entreat me greatly,supplicating me without end, and the companions around them,

αὖθι μένειν: τοῖον γὰρ ὑποτρομέουσιν ἅπαντες: ἀλλ᾽ ἐμὸς ἔνδοθι θυμὸς ἐτείρετο πένθεϊ λυγρῷ.

to remain there — for such was the fear they all felt;but my spirit within was being worn away by grievous suffering.

νῦν δ᾽ ἰθὺς μεμαῶτε μαχώμεθα, μὴ δέ τι δούρων ἔστω φειδωλή,

But now let us charge straight in and fight, and let us not be sparing with our spears,

ἵνα εἴδομεν εἴ κεν Ἀχιλλεὺς νῶϊ κατακτείνας ἔναρα βροτόεντα φέρηται

so that we may see whether Achilles may kill us bothand carry off our bloody spoils

νῆας ἔπι γλαφυράς, ἦ κεν σῷ δουρὶ δαμήῃ.'

to the hollow ships, or whether he may be brought down by your spear."

ὣς φαμένη καὶ κερδοσύνῃ ἡγήσατ᾽ Ἀθήνη:

So speaking, Athena led him forward in her treachery.

οἳ δ᾽ ὅτε δὴ σχεδὸν ἦσαν ἐπ᾽ ἀλλήλοισιν ἰόντες, τὸν πρότερος προσέειπε μέγας κορυθαίολος Ἕκτωρ:

And when in their advance they were near to one another, great Hector of the gleaming helmet spoke first to Achilles:

'οὔ σ᾽ ἔτι Πηλέος υἱὲ φοβήσομαι, ὡς τὸ πάρος περτρὶς περὶ ἄστυ μέγα Πριάμου δίον,

"I will no longer run in fear from you, son of Peleus, as I did before, when we ran three times around the great city of Priam,

οὐδέ ποτ᾽ ἔτλην μεῖναι ἐπερχόμενον:

and I did not dare at any point to stop and withstand your attack.

νῦν αὖτέ με θυμὸς ἀνῆκε στήμεναι ἀντία σεῖο:

But now my heart urges me to take a stand against you:

ἕλοιμί κεν ἤ κεν ἁλοίην.

I may kill you, or I may be killed.

ἀλλ᾽ ἄγε δεῦρο θεοὺς ἐπιδώμεθα: τοὶ γὰρ ἄριστοι μάρτυροι ἔσσονται καὶ ἐπίσκοποι ἁρμονιάων:

But come, let us call the gods as witnesses;for they will be the best witnesses and guardians of agreements.

οὐ γὰρ ἐγώ σ᾽ ἔκπαγλον ἀεικιῶ, αἴ κεν ἐμοὶ Ζεὺς δώῃ καμμονίην, σὴν δὲ ψυχὴν ἀφέλωμαι:

I will not commit any dreadful outrage against you,if Zeus grants me endurance and I take your life from you.

ἀλλ᾽ ἐπεὶ ἄρ κέ σε συλήσω κλυτὰ τεύχε᾽ Ἀχιλλεῦ νεκρὸν Ἀχαιοῖσιν δώσω πάλιν:

But when I have stripped you of your famous armour, Achilles,I will give your body back to the Achaeans;

ὣς δὲ σὺ ῥέζειν.

and you do the same.
