Metamorphic Rocks

formed from cooling & solidification of molten rock; formed from rocks that have been CHANGED by heat and pressure within the earth [ key word: change ]

Sedimentary Rocks

formed when small pieces of debris/broken pieces worn off other rocks have become stuck together

Igneous Rock

formed from red, hot melted rock inside the earth

Weathering

The breaking down of rocks and other materials on the Earth's surface.

Erosion

When the weathered down, broken rock material is transported to another place

Deposition

Process in which sediment is laid down in new locations.

Compaction Cementation

processes that form sedimentary rock [ sediment is squeezed and glued together into a new rock ]

Rock Cycle

a model that shows the endless cycling of materials that make up rocks, by processes that occur within The Earth and its surface.

The Crust

the outermost layer of the earth; liquid

The Mantle

a layer under the crust

The Asthenosphere

the upper layer of the earth's mantle, below the lithosphere, in which there is relatively low resistance to plastic flow and convection is thought to occur.

The Core

The central part of the earth; very dense, made of mostly iron and nickel.

The Matter of the Earth's layer

The Inner Core is solid, the outer core is liquid, the pressure in the inner core actually makes it solid.

Rocks

generally made of two or more minerals, mixed up through geological processes

Minerals

naturally occurring, inorganic and solid. They have a very specific chemical composition.
