One Health
A concept that recognizes that the health of domestic animals is connected to the health of humans and the environment.
Zoonotic Disease
Diseases that can be passed from animals to humans and vice versa.
Direct Transmission
Contact through touching an infected animal.
Indirect Transmission
Spread through shared food, unpasteurized milk, undercooked meat, or contact with bodily fluids from an infected animal.
Vector Transmission
Spread of disease by vectors such as ticks or mosquitoes that draw blood from infected animals.
Epidemiological Triangle
A model that considers the interactions between the agent, host, and environment in the spread of disease.
Avian Influenza (Bird Flu)
A viral infection primarily adapted to birds but can infect other species.
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza
A subtype of avian influenza that causes severe disease and high mortality rates in poultry.
H5N1
A strain of avian influenza known for causing serious human infections with a high mortality rate.
Contaminated Surfaces
Surfaces that can harbor viruses, allowing for transmission through indirect contact.
Bird Flu Virus in Air
Transmission of the bird flu can occur through droplets or dust containing the virus.
Environmental Drivers of H5N1 Outbreaks
Factors in the environment that can increase the risk of avian influenza outbreaks in poultry and wildlife.
Intermediate Hosts
Species, like pigs, that can be infected with avian influenza viruses and potentially adapt them for human transmission.
Avian Influenza Management
Practices aimed at limiting the spread of avian influenza, such as separating domestic and wild poultry and fencing.
