movement of water from low solute concentration to high solute concentration
define osmotic pressure
the pressure needed to resist the flow of H2O by a chemical system
define isotonic solution
the solutions are balanced and osmotic pressures are equal
define hypotonic solution
osmotic pressure in a cell is lower than the surrounding solution (cell swells)
define hypertonic solution
osmotic pressure is higher in a cell compared to the surrounding solution (cell shrivels)
