Later included (singing, dancing, rhythmic stomping, use of canes)

1925 reference of Howard university describing ritual

Philanthropy ray

To combat the violence against women through SYZter education, community awareness, activism, and financial support

44
New cards

What is GBV

Gender based violence is harmful acts towards a targeted gender with harmful violence such as stalking, harassment, sexual assault, etc.

45
New cards

National Philanthropy:

To combat the violence against women in various forms including but not limited to rape, incest, domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, harrassment, stalking, and many more. Through combined and individual group efforts, we demonstrate a commitment to education and asian unity.

46
New cards

In oder to educate and inform ourselves and our communities, Sigma Psi Zeta takes a proactive stance where violence against women is concerned and through this we accomplish it by:

*Volunteering to domestic violence shelters

*Sponsoring/attending conferences/meetings to empower women's rights

*Lending our ears to women that needs support

*Helping to stop violations against women refugees and asylum-seekers

*Advocating for political causes

47
New cards

Activism is the meants of uprooting injustice and we are the heirs of 2 histories:

*One of our foremothers who have built for us, our culture history in asia

*One of another foremother who forged a path for social justice and equality in US

Persistent and harmful traditions in Asia include but are not limited to: women/girls being forced to marry young, gender-based war crimes and political violence, women falling victim to traditional practices that violate their human rights, etc.

48
New cards

It's on Us

In 2014, VP Biden created White House Task Force to protect students from sexual assault and invited 10 heads of Greek Orgs. to participate, SYZ was one of them which led to 'It's On Us' campaign in september

In March 2015, SYZ officially partnered with 'It's On Us' campaign and became the first greek org to officially partner with the white house

Focus of the campaign: empower college students to be active bystanders and take a firm stance against sexual violence

49
New cards

Title IX Info

-All public and private elementary and secondary schools, school districts, colleges, and universities receiving any Federal funds must comply with Title IX.

-Title IX is a Federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities.

-Under Title, IX, discrimination on basis of sex can include sexual harassment or sexual violence, such as rape, sexual assault, sexual battery, and sexual coercion.

-Under Title IX, schools do need to have their own Title IX Coordinator.

50
New cards

What are 4 main things Title IX requires schools to

do?

1.) publish a notice of nondiscrimination

2.) have a title IX coordinator

3.) have a grievance procedure

4.) being "prompt" when receiving a complaint of discrimination, harassment, or violence

51
New cards

What is NOT Title IX:

-does not ensure justice for survivors

-not guided by trauma-informed practices (leads to more trauma)

-can encounter barriers during every step of the reporting/adjudication process

52
New cards

How to respond and support a survivor:

1.) Saying that you believe them, it makes a difference in

validating their story

2.) Nodding your head and showing empathy

3.) Encouraging them to keep telling their story

4.) Paraphrasing their story to show you're listening

5.) Asking if they need to seek professional help, like

therapy/counseling

6.) Keep their story confidential

7.) Help them identify safe individuals within their existing support system

8.) Allow them to make their own decision, ASK what you can do to help

9.) Don't tell them how they should feel

10.) Continue to show support following the next days, weeks, months

Land acknowledgment

Wahpekute, Očhéthi Šakówiŋ

A land acknowledgment is a formal statement that respects and recognizes Indigenous peoples and their traditional territories.

It recognizes the land you currently reside on and the ongoing relationship Indigenous peoples have with it.

It should not be in past tense—Indigenous peoples are still here, and colonialism is ongoing.

Indigenous people are not relics of the past.

These statements are meant to honor and celebrate Indigenous communities.

Indigenous people are often written out of current affairs, which disenfranchises and disempowers them.

Erasure exists in every state and at universities across the U.S.

We must fight complacency by educating ourselves about local Indigenous communities.

Beyond Acknowledgement

It is only the first step in advocating for and celebrating Indigenous communities.

Requires changing how we perceive the world and how we speak.

Must advocate for current issues affecting Indigenous communities, such as:

Climate change

Missing Indigenous women and Two-Spirit people

Change of Language

Americans are conditioned in how they view Indigenous people.

Indigenous people are often wrongly seen as part of the past.

Language has been used as a tool of propaganda against Indigenous communities.

Change of Perception

A harmful myth is that Indigenous people only exist in history books.

Why this is harmful:

Erases current issues Indigenous communities face.

Leads to stereotyping and dehumanization.

Dehumanization is ingrained in American culture and Greek life.

We must actively dismantle these perceptions and stop harmful behaviors.

Cultural Appropriation & Awareness

Indigenous cultures are often reduced to party themes, which is harmful.
