What can we divide LTM into

Explicit - what we can consciously recall (can think about it)

Implicit - what is hard to explain (hard to think about)

2
New cards

Who proposed there was multiple types of LSM

Tulving

New cards

What are the types of LTM

Episodic

  • memory of events in your life

More complex

  • time stamped ( what happened as well as when it happened)

  • Memory of event (contains dif elements like location, people, activities, emotions) these are woven into one

  • Must make a conscious effort to recall episodic memories

EXPLICIT TYPE OF MEMORY AS WE HAVE TO CONSCIOUALY THINK ABOUT IT

4
New cards

WHAT is the aspect of procedural memory

Memory of skills

How to do things

IMPLICIT (don’t have to try and recall the info consciously to do it)

E.g riding a bike

We van focus our thoughts on doing other things whilst we do these things like riding a bike

5
New cards

What is the aspect of semantic memory

General knowledge of the world

EXPLICITT

What objects do ,social noms are, maths, language

These begin as episodic memory as we learn information through events but gradually we forget how we learned things

Tulving suggest that semantic memories are less prone to distortion and forgetting than episodic memories

6
New cards

What case study can be used to support the complex LTM

CLIVE WEARING

A man had severe amnesia caused by a viral infection in the hippocampus and he sued to be world class pianist

He is still able to play the piano (procedural) he’s unable to create new episodic memories

He remembers his second wif but ankle to recall when he last he saw her

7
New cards

What is an issue with using Clive and HM as suggesting that LTM IS MORE COMPLEX

Conducted using ppt with brain damage

The damage helps us to understand what’s happening

But lack of control over what damage occurred and no measures of ho brain was like before

Makes it difficult to judge how much o specific brain damage is responsible for HM and Wearings post damage
