Three witches meet on a Scottish moor and plan to encounter Macbeth

King Duncan hears of Macbeth’s bravery in battle against Norway and the traitor Macdonwald. Duncan orders the execution of the Thane of Cawdor and grants the title to Macbeth.

The witches meet Macbeth and Banquo, prophesying that Macbeth will be king and Banquo’s descendants will be kings. Soon after, Macbeth is informed that he is now Thane of Cawdor.

Duncan announces Malcolm as heir to the throne. Macbeth sees him as an obstacle to his ambitions.

Lady Macbeth reads Macbeth’s letter about the witches’ prophecy and plots Duncan’s murder to secure the crown.
