Spermatogenesis hormones
Luteinizing hormone (LH) stimulates Leydig cells to produce testosterone, while follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulates Sertoli cells for sperm production.
Oogenesis hormones
Luteinizing hormone (LH) triggers ovulation and corpus luteum formation, while follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulates ovarian follicle growth.
Testis (under microscope)
The organ containing seminiferous tubules where spermatogenesis occurs and Leydig cells that produce testosterone.
Ovary (under microscope)
The organ containing follicles where oogenesis occurs, ultimately producing ova.
Leydig cells
Cells located in the testes that produce testosterone, which is crucial for the development of male secondary sexual characteristics.
Function of seminal fluid
Provides a medium for sperm motility, nourishes sperm, and includes substances that help neutralize the acidity of the female reproductive tract.
Mature Graafian follicle
Contains an oocyte, the zona pellucida, and the antrum; it is involved in the ovulation process.
Parts of the blastocyst
Trophoblast (forms the placenta) and inner cell mass (develops into the embryo).
16-day embryo model
Illustrates early embryonic structures including the primitive streak and germ layers that develop into various body systems.
Primary germ layers
Ectoderm (forms skin and nervous system), mesoderm (forms muscles, bones, and circulatory system), endoderm (forms gut and internal organs).
Monozygotic twins
Twins that originate from one fertilized egg (zygote) that splits into two embryos.
Dizygotic twins
Twins that originate from two separate fertilized eggs.
Ectopic pregnancy
A pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus, commonly in the fallopian tubes.
Breech presentation
A delivery position where the baby is positioned feet-first rather than head-first.
Placenta previa
A condition where the placenta covers the internal cervical opening, potentially causing complications during delivery.
