External Conflict
character struggles against an outside force
Internal Conflict
takes place in the mind of the character
1st Person Narrator
The protagonist tells the story from their point of view. Words such as I, me, or my are commonly used.
3rd Person Narrator
When someone outside the story is the narrator. Character's names and pronouns such as he, she, him, her, they, and them are commonly used.
Characterization
The process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character.
Direct Characterization
A writer states the character's traits, or characteristics.
Indirect Characterization
A writer depends on the reader to draw conclusions about the character's traits through their words, thoughts, actions, and how other people respond to the character.
Exposition
The introduction of a story or drama in which the author introduces the characters, setting, and basic situation.
Climax
The highest point of interest or suspense in a story. The turning point.
Symbol
When something in the text represents or stands for something else.
Foreshadowing
The author's use of clues to hint at what might happen later in the story.
Flashback
A technique that allows a writer to present past events during current events in a story in order to provide background information for the current situation.
Mood
The feelings or emotions created in the reader by a literary work or passage.
Narrator
The speaker or character who tells the story.
