What is the function of the rectus abdominis muscle?
Flexion of the thoracic and lumbar spine.
What is the linea alba?
A single, fibrous midline of tissue separating the rectus abdominis muscle.
What is the function of the linea semilunaris?
Provides strength, mobility, and flexibility for the lateral sides of the rectus abdominis muscles.
What is the rectus sheath?
A fibrous sheath that protects the rectus abdominis muscles.
What is the function of the external oblique muscle?
Helps rotate the trunk.
What are the functions of the internal oblique muscle?
Flexes and bends the trunk; helps maintain pressure in defecation, urination, and childbirth.
What is the primary role of the transversus abdominis muscle?
Protects internal organs by holding them in place.
What is the suspected function of the pyramidalis muscle?
Thought to tense the linea alba.
What is the function of the inguinal ligament?
Supports soft tissue in the groin area and anchors the abdomen and pelvis.
What is the arcuate line?
The structure that provides entrance for the inferior epigastric artery and vein.
What is the aponeurosis of the external oblique muscle?
A sheet of pearly white fibrous tissue that replaces tendons in a wide area of attachment.
What is the function of the serratus anterior muscle?
Anterolateral movement of the scapula along the ribs.
What is the triangular ligament?
Helps hold the liver in place.
What is the coronary ligament?
Holds the liver to the inferior surface of the diaphragm.
What does the round ligament do?
Connects the liver to the umbilicus.
What is the function of the falciform ligament?
Connects the anterior part of the liver to the ventral wall of the abdomen.
What is the ligamentum teres hepatis?
A ligament that forms the free edges of the falciform ligament of the liver.
What is the lumbar plexus?
A collection of nerves arising from the spinal cord, primarily from T12-L5.
What does the ilioinguinal nerve supply?
The base of the penis and scrotum.
What does the genital branch of the genitofemoral nerve supply?
The cremaster muscle.
What is the function of the fundiform ligament of the penis?
A thickening of superficial fascia extending from the linea alba to the lower abdominal wall.
What is the role of the suspensory ligament of the penis?
Suspends the penis, holding it close to the pubic bone and supporting it when erect.
What is the retrovesicular pouch in males?
Peritoneum in males extending from the middle third of the rectum to the upper part of the urinary bladder.
What is the vesicouterine pouch in females?
Peritoneum extending from the urinary bladder to the uterus in females.
What is the rectouterine pouch (Pouch of Douglas) in females?
Peritoneum situated between the rectum and the posterior of the uterus in females.
What is the greater omentum?
A four-layered peritoneum that extends from the stomach, covering most of the colon and small intestine.
What is the lesser omentum?
A two-layered peritoneum that extends from the liver to the lesser curvature of the stomach.
What is the conjoint tendon?
A fusion of the internal oblique and transversus abdominis aponeuroses that supports the posterior wall of the inguinal canal.
29. What is the deep inguinal ring?
An opening in the transversalis fascia that serves as the entrance to the inguinal canal.
What is the superficial inguinal ring?
an opening in the external oblique aponeurosis that serves as the exit of the inguinal canal.
What is the function of the cremaster muscle?
Regulates the temperature of the testes by raising and lowering them.
What is the inguinal canal
A passage in the lower anterior abdominal wall that transmits the spermatic cord in males and the round ligament in females.
