Linear Momentum
The product of a body's mass and its linear velocity: p = mv
Newton's Second Law (Momentum Form)
The time rate of change of linear momentum of a body is equal to the resultant force acting on the body and is in the direction of that force: F = dp/dt
Impulse
The net effect of force acting over a short time interval: Impulse = FΔt
Impulse-Momentum Theorem
Impulse is equal to the change in momentum: FΔt = Δ(mv)
Average Force (Impulse)
When a variable force acts for a short time, impulse is the product of the average force and the time period: Impulse = FavΔt
Principle of Conservation of Linear Momentum
If a system is isolated (no net external force), the total linear momentum of the system remains constant.
Free Body Diagram (FBD)
A graphical illustration used to visualize applied forces, resulting reactions, and movements of a body in a steady state condition.
