Body planes

Sagittal Plane

Divides the body into left and right portions.

Coronal Plane

Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions.

Transverse Plane

Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portions.

Midsagittal Plane

A specific sagittal plane that divides the body into equal left and right halves.

Parasagittal Plane

A sagittal plane that divides the body into unequal left and right portions.

Oblique Plane

Divides the body at an angle, not parallel to the other three planes.

Frontal Plane

Another term for the coronal plane, dividing the body into front and back.

Dorsal Plane

Another form of the coronal plane; often used in veterinary anatomy.

Ventral Plane

Refers to the front side as opposed to the back or dorsal side.

Horizontal plane

A plane that divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portions.
