What is the difference between a chemical and physical change?

Chemical changes involves the production of an entirely new substance through breaking and rearranging atoms. Physical changes are usually reversible and do not involve the creation of different elements or compounds.

2
New cards

What is Filtration?

A method that separates parts of a mixture. Usually an insoluble solid from a liquid. i.e. sand and water.

3
New cards

What is evaporation?

When liquid turns to gas. It is a method for separating water from a solution.

4
New cards

What is distillation?

It is a way to separate water from a solution and have it turn back into water. It is the evaporating and condensing of water.

5
New cards

Is separating a mixture a chemical or physical change?

physical

6
New cards

Where are the reactants and products located in a chemical equation?

the reactants come before the arrow, the products come after

7
New cards

What does the law of conservation of matter state?

Matter is not created or destroyed so the mass of the products and reactants should be the same. Also, the number of atoms on the product side should be the same as the number of atoms on the reactant side.

Look back over p.10-13 in your packet. Make sure you can answer the questions except for the drawing of the molecules.

...

9
New cards

What is an exothermic reaction and how does its temperature change?

It is a reaction where heat is released and the temperature goes up.

10
New cards

What is an endothermic reaction and how does its temperature change?

It is a reaction where heat energy is taken in and used in the reaction, so its temperature goes down.

11
New cards

How can you speed up the rate of a reaction?

Decreasing the particle size, increasing the temperature and increasing the concentration of the reactant.

12
New cards

Describe different ways to separate a mixture.

Iron in a mixture can be separated with magnets, water can be filtered from a mixture, water can evaporate from a mixture.

13
New cards

What are the signs that a chemical reaction is occurring.

Bubbles that show a gas being produced, giving off heat, or getting colder and a color change.

14
New cards

Is a phase change a chemical or physical change?

Physical

15
New cards

Give some examples of chemical changes.

Rusting, burning, baking, frying

16
New cards

What ingredients are responsible for the chemical changes in baking?

Mix baking powder and a liquid to produce carbon dioxide. This gas makes the baked products rise.

17

What are the two things that must combine to make a flame when lighting a bunsen burner?

Oxygen and fuel.
