Hilum
The indentation on the medial surface of the kidney where the renal artery, renal vein, and ureter enter and exit.
Renal Corpuscle
The functional unit of the kidney consisting of glomerular capillaries and the glomerular capsule.
Nephron
The functional unit of the kidney that filters blood.
Antidiuretic Hormone
A hormone that prevents urination and stimulates reabsorption of water.
Proteinuria
An abnormal condition characterized by large amounts of protein in the urine.
Juxtaglomerular Apparatus
A structure near the glomerulus that helps regulate blood pressure.
Filtration Membrane
A membrane created by the glomerulus and podocytes that allows filtration of blood.
Selective Reabsorption
The process where most reabsorption of water and solutes occurs in the proximal tubule of the nephron.
