Drugs that inhibit bacterial growth (bacteriostatic) or kill bacteria (bactericidal).
Bacteriostatic
Inhibits the growth of bacteria.
Bactericidal
Kills bacteria.
Fungal infections (superficial)
Fungal infections limited to skin and eyes.
Fungal infections (systemic)
Fungal infections affecting blood, lungs, CNS.
Antifungal
Drug used to treat fungal infections; not widely used in veterinary medicine.
Culture and sensitivity test
Laboratory test to identify the agent and guide antibiotic choice by determining which antibiotics inhibit growth.
Sensitivity testing
Process to determine which antibiotics inhibit growth of bacteria in a culture.
Nosocomial infections
Hospital-based infections; prevent with proper disinfection and antisepsis.
Disinfectant
Substance used on inanimate objects to kill microorganisms or inactivate viruses.
Antiseptic
Substance used on living tissues to kill microorganisms.
Parasites
Organisms that live off a host by deriving nutrients from it.
Ectoparasites
Parasites that live on the exterior of the host.
Endoparasites
Parasites that live inside the host.
Parasitiasis
Animal infected but with no clinical signs.
Paratiosis
Animal infected with clinical signs.
