Who first invested latitude and longitude
Eratosthenes
What is latitude?
a horizontal measure of distance north or south of the Equator (up and down); circles that pass through Earth at a right angle to the rotational axis
What is the difference between equator and Equator?
Equator is the ONLY line of latitude that is a great circle, 0 degrees at the center of the Earth; equators are small circles that vary in size
What is longitude?
a vertical measure of distance east or west with no obvious point of reference (left or right); circles of equal size from the polar axes
Prime Meridian
point at 0 degrees longitude that runs through Greenwich, England
What is a rhumb line?
the straight line that reflects a constant compass direction on a Mercator map project- not the real shortest distance between two points across the globe
How do you find the longitude of your location’s antipode (opposite)?
subtract your first locations degree of longitude from 180 to get your antipodes degrees- must always equal to 180 degrees
How do you find the latitude of your location’s antipode (opposite)?
your first locations degree of latitude will be the same for your antipodes in the opposite direction (if your first latitude is measured north, your second latitude will be the same value measured south)
How do you add or subtract numbers in scientific notation?
step one: convert both numbers to the same exponent
step two: add/subtract the coefficients and change the exponent so the numbers are between 1-10
How do you multiply numbers in scientific notation?
step one: multiply the base numbers
step two: add the exponents
How do you divide numbers in scientific notation?
step one: divide the numerator by the denominator
step two: subtract the exponents
