Comfort
A transient and dynamic state of fulfillment across physical, emotional, psychospiritual, sociocultural, and environmental domains.
Dyspnea
Labored breathing or shortness of breath, often associated with anxiety or distress.
Fatigue
A lack of energy with or without drowsiness, often resulting in activity intolerance and decreased cognition.
Pain
A sensory and emotional experience associated with tissue damage, often referred to as the 6th vital sign.
FLACC Scale
A behavioral pain assessment scale used for children, evaluating face, legs, activity, cry, and consolability.
Wong-Baker FACES® Pain Rating Scale
A visual scale that allows patients to rate their pain from 0 to 10 using facial expressions.
OPQRST
An acronym used in pain assessment standing for Onset, Provocation & Palliation, Quality, Region & Radiation, Severity, and Timing.
Acute Pain
Sudden pain caused by specific injury or disease, often relieved when the underlying cause is treated.
Chronic Pain
Ongoing pain that extends beyond normal healing time and affects quality of life.
Somatic Pain
Pain originating from nociceptors on the skin and musculoskeletal tissues.
Visceral Pain
Pain originating from internal body organs and linings of body cavities.
Sleep Disturbance
Difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep alongside excessive somnolence and inability to adhere to a sleep schedule.
Sleep Hygiene
Practices to promote regular sleep patterns, restful environments, and relaxation.
Intervention Techniques
Approaches for managing comfort including medications, relaxation techniques, and various therapies.
Nociceptors
Sensory receptors that respond to pain by sending signals to the spinal cord and brain.
Neuropathic Pain
Pain that results from dysfunction in the nervous system, often caused by altered sensory signal transmission.
