APES 2024
Ocean warming
caused by increase of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere
What does ocean warming impact
Marine species b loss of habitat, metabolic and reproductive changes
Causing coral bleaching which occurs when coral lose their algae and causes coral to bleach white
Some corals recover and some die
Ocean acidification
the decrease in pH of the ocean due to increase of CO2 being absorbed by ocean
H 2O + CO2 H 2CO3 (carbonic acid)
As more CO2 is released ocean becomes more acidic
Human activities that contribute to ocean acidification by
release more CO2 include burning fossil fuels, vehicle emissions and deforestation
Coral are unabel to form shells due to
loss of calcium carbonate
Species become endangered through
Poaching
Specialist species
Invasive species
Climate change
Poaching
illegal hunting for food, fur, tusks, may be overharvested, removed from wild and sold as pets
Specialist species
have a specialized niche, less tolerant of climate change
Invasive species
can outcompete native species for food, space, sun,
water
Climate change
shift of habitats, habitat loss, change can occur too
quickly for species to adapt
CITES 1973
international agreement for countries to set up agencies to monitor the import and export of endangered species
IUCN Red List
list of endangered, extinct and threatened species
• Protected wildlife areas such as national parks, wildlife preserves, animal sanctuaries
Currently the most endangered due to climate change
Amphibians
Lacey Act
first passed in 1900, control trade of wildlife
• Prohibited transport of illegally harvested game animals across state lines
Marine Mammal Protection Act 1972
prohibits killing of all marine mammals in the US
• Prohibits import or export of any marine mammal body parts
Endangered Species Act (ESA) 1973
designed to protect species from extinction
• Lists threatened and endangered species and prohibits harm of those species
• List by US Fish and Wildlife Service
