Buccal cavity

Plays a role in oral resonance and high-level consonant production, located lateral to the oral cavity between teeth and cheeks.

Pharyngeal cavity (pharynx)

Shape altered by pharyngeal constrictor muscle, laryngeal elevation and depression, includes types like nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx.

Velopharyngeal port (VPP)

Opening between oropharynx and nasopharynx.

Nasal cavity

Warms and humidifies air to protect the lungs, filters air, and aids in vowel production.

Lips

Lower lip is faster, stronger, achieves greater velocity and force, does most of the work in lip closure, and is attached to the mandible.

Orbicularis oris

Encircles the mouth opening.

Mandible

Plays a role in speech by jaw opening and closing, assists the lips, changes position for tongue movement, and is involved in mastication.
