Dream Recall
The ability to remember dreams upon waking, which differs between REM and nREM sleep according to Dement and Kleitman's study.
REM Sleep
A stage of sleep characterized by Rapid Eye Movement, associated with vivid dreaming.
nREM Sleep
Non-Rapid Eye Movement sleep, typically not associated with dreaming and includes quiescent stages.
Physiological Measures
Objective measures such as EEG that are used in sleep studies to understand sleep states and dreaming.
Positive Correlation
A relationship in which higher values of one variable correspond to higher values of another variable, evidenced in the study between dream duration estimates and REM length.
Eye Movement Patterns
Observed movement of the eyes during REM sleep that may relate to the content of dreams.
Laboratory Experiment
A controlled study conducted in a lab setting, allowing for manipulation of variables, as used in the Dement and Kleitman study.
Quantitative Data
Numerical data collected in the study, such as duration of REM sleep and number of words in dream narratives.
Qualitative Data
Descriptive data providing insights into the content of dreams as reported by the participants.
Ecological Validity
The extent to which the findings of a study can be generalized to real-world settings, which may be limited in lab-based studies.
Operationalized Definition
A definition made specific for research purposes, like defining a 'dream' as a recollection with content in this study.
Deception in Research
A common ethical issue where participants are misled about some aspect of the study, as seen with participant WD in the Dement and Kleitman study.
