Social Learning Theory
A theory that suggests people learn from one another through observation, imitation, and modeling.
Bobo Doll Experiment
An experimental study by Bandura to investigate if social behaviors (e.g., aggression) can be acquired via observation.
Reciprocal Determinism
The theory that a person's behavior is influenced by personal factors and the social environment.
Mirror Neurons
Neurons that fire both when an individual acts and when they observe the same action performed by another.
Self-Regulation
The ability to control one's behavior, emotions, and thoughts in pursuit of long-term goals; it includes three components: self-monitoring, self-evaluation, and self-reaction.
Intrinsic Motivation
The drive to engage in an activity for its own sake and personal rewards.
Extrinsic Motivation
Engagement in an activity to earn external rewards or avoid punishment.
Latent Learning
A type of learning that occurs but is not immediately reflected in behavior.
Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow's motivational theory consisting of a five-tier model of human needs, often depicted as hierarchical levels within a pyramid.
Humanistic Psychology
A psychological perspective that emphasizes the study of the whole person and the uniqueness of individuals.
Freudian Slip
An unintentional error regarded as revealing subconscious feelings.
Free Association
A practice in psychoanalysis where patients are encouraged to say whatever comes to mind.
Defense Mechanisms
Psychological strategies used unconsciously to protect oneself from anxiety or uncomfortable thoughts.
Conformity
The act of matching attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors to group norms.
Obedience
Behavior change in response to a command from an authority figure.
