What was the economic problem that the North defaced after the Civil War?
Around 800,000 Union soldiers were returning home from the war and needed jobs. While many jobs were required, factories were laying off workers.
Why did many Americans still worry about the freedom slaves of the South?
Almost overnight, there were now 4 million freed slaves in the south. These slaves never owned property and were not allowed to read or write. There was a worry about what would become of them.
What is the reconstruction Era?
The ear following the Civil War became known as the Reconstruction era the rebuilding of the south.
What were Lincoln’s thoughts about the south rejoining the United States?
Lincoln wanted to make in fairly easy for the southerners to rejoin the U.S. he believed the faster the nation was reunited, the faster the south would be able to rebuild.

On April 14th, 1865, President Lincoln attended a play at Ford’s theatre in Washington, D.C. John Wilkes Booth (a supporter of the confederacy) went to the president’s box at the theatre and shot Lincoln. Lincoln would die the next morning. Booth was later caught and killed in a barn outside the city. Lincoln was the first u.S. president to be assassinated.

What is the 13th Amendment?
The 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the United States.
Why did Southern state Governments pass the Black Codes?
Southern states were upset abut the passing of the 13th amendment.
What are the black codes?
These codes forbade freedom (African American) to vote, own guns, and serve on juries.
What is the 14th amendment?
The 14th amendment says that all people born in the U.S. are citizens of the U.S. and the government cannot take away peoples natural rights. African Americans were now considered citizens.
What is the 15th Amendment?
The 15th amendment forbids any state to deny any citizen the right to vote because of race. Gives African American men who are 21 years or older the right to vote.
How did the white southerners in the south view white republicans?
Many whites in the south felt that any southerners who helped the republicans was a traitor. The called the white southern republicans scalawags, a word used for small, scruffy horses.
Why did some northerners move to the south after the civil war?
Some northerners went to the south in hope to profit off of the south being rebuilt. Other northerners, who were once union soldiers, hands grown to love the land of the south, so they moved there after the war.
Explain how African Americans were in public office during the reconstruction era.
During reconstruction, they began to run for and were elected to public office in the south. African Americans became sheriffs, mayors, and legislators, in new state and local governments.
What were the conservatives of the south’s beliefs about who hold power in the southern governments after the civil war?
These’d conservatives were willing to let African Americans to vote and hold a few offices but they felt that all the real power should be in the hands of the whites.
What were the poll taxes that the southern states passed? Why did they pass these?
Many southerner states passed poll taxes. These poll taxes required voters to pay a fee each time the voted. This kept poor African Americans from voting.
What were the literacy testes that the southern states passed? Why did they pass these?
Many southerner states also passed literacy tests. These literacy tests required voters to read and explain a section of the constitution. This kept many African Americans from being able to vote because they never learned how to read.

Legal separation of races.
Explain what the Jim Crow laws were.
These laws allowed legal segregation. Blacks and whites were separated in schools, restaurants, theaters, trains, playgrounds, hospitals, and even cemeteries.
Explain the ruling of the Supreme Court case of Plessy v. Ferguson.
The Supreme Court ruled that segregation was legal as long as the facilities for blacks and whites were equal. The facilites were rarely equal.

More and more factories began to develop in the south. The south had a lot of natural resources, specifically iron and coal, which they made a lot of money of off from selling it to others.
