The French Revolutionary War 1793-1802
British troops formed an allied army in Flanders in 1793. British troops evacuated from Germany in 1795. 1801 British army defeated French forces, left in Egypt after the Battle of the Nile.
British success in India
1797 Wellesley sent on military duty to India. 1803 war broke out with the Mahratta Confederacy, association with princes in central India. September 1803, 7000 men Wellesley attacked Indian army of 40,000 at Assaye and won. Two months won again at Argaum with 11,000 men against 30,000 enemies.
The Napoleonic War 1803-9
War recommenced 1803, British set to recapture colonies returned to France and its allies by the Treaty of Amiens. 1805 British sent to Hanover but were evacuated. British army victory in Sicily 1806. 1807, expedition sent to Copenhagen to seize the Danish fleet, led by Wellesley. 1809 Austria declared war on Napoleon. British landed on the island of Walcheren, was malaria ridden.
Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington
He made his military reputation in India. Given control of the British forces in Portugal 1809 led the forces that defeated Napoleon in Waterloo.
