Londons Port was the busiest in the world but was starting to shut down, sizes of ships has increased, losing trade to European ports
Cause of decline
Low quality houses build after WW2, containerisation meant that less dockers were needed, portside industry closed
Problems in the 1980s
Loss of jobs, no modern shopping centres, narrow and congested roads, almost all land was developed, over half was derelict HOWEVER, strong east Enders community
