simple squamous
Location: lining of blood vessels, kidney, the heart, alveoli of lungs, and lining of ventral body cavity
Function: filtration, diffusion, osmosis, and secretion of lubricating substances
simple cuboidal
Location: lining of blood vessels, kidney, the heart, alveoli of lungs, and lining of ventral body cavity
Function: filtration, diffusion, osmosis, and secretion of lubricating substances
simple columnar
Location: non-ciliated lines the stomach and intestinal tract. ciliated are in uterine tube, parts of the uterus, and small bronchi
Function: absorption, secretion of mucous through goblet cells in GI tract, and propels mucous (cilia)
pseudostratified columnar
Location: ciliated lines the trachea and upper respiratory tract. nonciliated in sperm ducts and ducts of large glands
Function: secretion of mucus and propulsion of mucus by ciliary action.
stratified squamous
Location: nonkeratinized in lining of the mouth, esophagus, and vagina. keratinized forms epidermis
Function: protection against abrasion, pathogens, and chemical exposure.
transitional epithelium
Location: lines the urinary bladder, ureters, and part of the urethra.
Function: allows for stretching and distension of the urinary organs.
hyaline cartilige
Location: forms most of the embryonic skeleton, covers the ends of long bones, and supports the nose, ribs, trachea, and larynx.
Function: provides flexibility, support, and reduces friction between bony surfaces.
elastic cartilage
Location: found in the external ear, epiglottis.
Function: supports and maintains the shape of the epiglottis and outer ear
fibrocartilage
Location: found in intervertebral discs, pubic symphysis, and menisci of the knee. Function: able to withstand compression and is weight-bearing
loose areolar
Location: commonly found epithelia of tissue of skin, surrounding capilaries, and packages internal organs
Function: cushioning and packaging
loose adipose
Location: under the skin, in long bones, breast, abdominal area, around kidneys, and eyeballs
Function: store fat for energy, insulation, protection, and support of other tissues/organs
loose reticular
Location: lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow
Function: supports other cells
dense regular
Location: tendons, ligaments
Function: strong attachment between muscle and bone
dense irregular
Location: fibrous capsule of joint, dermis, submucosa of GI tract
Function: to provide strength and withstand tension in many different directions
