Characterization
the methods an author uses to create and develop their characters through words and actions, thoughts, appearance, and what others say about the character
Irony
a contrast between what appears to be and what really is
Mood
a mood or atmosphere is a feeling that a literary work conveys to readers.
Tone
the tone of the work is the writer's attitude toward his or her subject.
Personification
a figure of speech in which human characteristics are given to non-living things, and sometimes animals
Plot
a series of 'happenings' or events in a literary work
Setting
when and where the action takes place in a story/text
theme
the moral or lesson learned from reading a text or viewing a piece of art
Imagery
visually descriptive or figurative language the writer uses that appeals to the senses
Flashback
a scene that interrupts the present action to depict some earlier event via dream, remembrance, reverie, etc. The term may refer to the scene itself or its presentation (use).
Metaphor
a comparison of two unlike things implied by just stating them without using 'like' or 'as' to make the comparison
Rhyme scheme
the pattern of end rhyme, usually marked with lowercase letters. To identify the rhyme scheme, list the sequence of rhymes in order, using a new letter for each new rhyme.
Hyperbole
a deliberate exaggeration to achieve a serious, comic, or ironic effect. Sometimes literary critics call it overstatement
simile
a figure of speech in which a word is equated to something it is not normally connected to using "like" or "as"
Juxtaposition
two things being placed close together in a text to show contrast
Climax
the most intense, exciting, or important point of something; a culmination or apex; turning point of the story
Dialect
a particular form of a language that is peculiar to a specific region or social group.
Narrator
the person who tells the story
point of view
the perspective from which a story is told
Resolution
End of the story where loose ends are tied up
