Eukarya
The domain that includes all eukaryotic organisms.
Chordata
The phylum that includes all vertebrates and some invertebrates.
Agnatha
A class of jawless fish including lampreys and hagfish.
Chondrichthyes
A class of jawed cartilaginous fish, such as sharks, skates, and rays.
Osteichthyes
A superclass that includes jawed bony fish.
Cloaca
A common opening for excretion and reproduction found in some animals, including fish.
Ammocoetes
The larval stage of lampreys that resembles a tadpole or worm.
Diadromous
Referring to fish that migrate between saltwater and freshwater for spawning.
Claspers
Modified pelvic fins in male Chondrichthyes used for reproduction.
Swim bladder
An internal gas-filled organ in bony fish that helps maintain buoyancy.
Cycloid scales
A type of fish scale that is smooth and rounded at the edges.
Placoid scales
Rough, tooth-like scales found on cartilaginous fish.
