any alteration of the physical, chemical and biological properties of the atmospheric air, or any discharge thereto of any liquid, gaseous or solid substances that will or is likely to create or to render the air resources of the country harmful, detrimental, or injurious to public health, safety or welfare or which will adversely affect their utilization for domestic, commercial, industrial, agricultural, recreational, or other legitimate purposes.
Anthropogenic
Dominant source of air pollutants in the atmosphere of areas primarily undergoing industrialization.
Stationary Sources
refer to any building or immobile structure, facility or installation which emits or may emit any air pollutant, and may be defined generally as individual point (point source) of air emissions (e.g. smokestacks).
Mobile Sources
any vehicle propelled by or through combustion of carbon-based or other fuel, constructed and operated principally for the conveyance of persons or the transportation of property or goods.
Area Sources
differs from stationary sources in a way that the source of air emissions is not confined to a discrete point or points of emissions
Examples: construction activities and unpaved road ways
An index determined by calculating the degree of pollution in the city or at the monitoring point and includes five main pollutants:
▪ Particulate matter
▪ Ground level ozone (O3 )
▪ Sulfur dioxide (SO2 )
▪ Carbon monoxide (CO)
▪ Nitrogen dioxide (NO2 )
Good
Numerical Value: 0-50
Good
Air quality is considered satisfactory, and air pollution poses little or no risk.
Moderate
Numerical Value: 51-100
Moderate
Air quality is acceptable; however, for some pollutants there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution.
Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
Numerical Value: 101-150
Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
Members of sensitive groups may experience health effects. The general public is not likely to be affected.
Unhealthy
Numerical Value: 151-200
Unhealthy
Everyone may begin to experience health effects; members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects.
Very Unhealthy
Numeric Value: 201-300
Very Unhealthy
Health warnings of emergency conditions. The entire population is more likely to be affected.
Hazardous
Numeric Value: 301-500
Hazardous
Health alert: everyone may experience more serious health effects.
