systemise, categorise, analyse knowledge. belief in reason and distrust in religious authority and the divine. developed ideals such as liberty, progress, tolerance, fraternity, and constitutional govt. personal liberty and religious tolerance over absolute monarchy and roman catholic dogma

rejected fluidity of the baroque and emphasised bold horizontal profiles and stereotomy (cutting of stone). elements were in cubic/rectangular form
