What is the hepatic portal system?
A venous system that carries blood from digestive organs to the liver.
Why is blood from digestive organs sent to the liver?
To process nutrients and remove harmful substances.
Which three veins drain into the hepatic portal vein?
Splenic vein, inferior mesenteric vein, and superior mesenteric vein.
How is the splenic vein positioned?
Horizontally.
How is the inferior mesenteric vein positioned?
Vertically.
How is the superior mesenteric vein positioned?
Vertically on the right side of the body.
Where does the hepatic portal vein carry blood?
To liver sinusoids.
What are liver sinusoids?
Specialized capillaries in the liver where exchange and processing occur.
How does blood leave the liver?
Through hepatic veins.
Where do hepatic veins drain?
Into the inferior vena cava.
What is the overall flow of the hepatic portal system?
Digestive organs → portal veins → hepatic portal vein → liver sinusoids → hepatic veins → inferior vena cava.
