Anxiety disorders
Anxiety=primary symptom/ cause of other symptoms, most common mental disorder in U.S
Generalized Anxiety disorder (GAD)
Excessive anxiety under most circumstances and worry about pretty much anything
Panic disorder
Recurrent + unpredictable panic attacks
Agoraphobia
Afraid to be in inescapable, public situations where there is high chance of “embarrassing” symptoms/ panic attack
Social anxiety disorder (SAD)
Intense, persistent fear of being watched and judged by others
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
Repeated obsessions, compulsions, or both- significant distress/ impairment

Persistent, intrusive, unwanted thoughts that individual cannot get out of mind

Ritualistic behaviors performed repeatedly
Hoarding disorder
Persistent difficulty to discard or leave possessions in the past bc of a perceived need to save the items and distress parting with them

Increasing cognitive misperception of being overweight
Trichotillomania
Frequent, repeated, irresistible urges to pull hair from scalp or eyebrows
Excoriation disorder
Repeated picking of skin
Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Re-experiencing traumatic event in nightmares or flashbacks in which they relive the event
Bipolar disorder
Mood swings alternating between periods of major depression and mania
Rapid cycling (BPD)
Short periods of mania followed almost immediately by deep depression, usually for longer duration
Cyclothymic disorder
Mild form of bipolar disorder in which person has mood swings over a period of years that go from mild depression to emotional highs
Major depressive disorder
Intense depressed mood, reduced interest/ pleasure in activities, loss of energy, and problems in making decisions for at least two weeks
Persistent depressive disorder
Low mood for at least two years + two other symptoms of depression (e.g hopelessness, low self-esteem)
Disruptive mood direction disorder (DMDD)
Children/ adolescents experience ongoing irritability, anger, and frequent, intense temper outbursts
