Blazon

lists the physical attributes of a subject (normally female) depicting them as beautiful

Elegy

a poem expression sorrow for someone who is dead

Shakespearean sonnet

14 lines, three quatrains (four lines each) and a couplet, ABAB CDCD EFEF GG, iambic pentameter, volta between the 2nd and 3rd quatrain

petrarchan sonnet

(italian sonnet), two quatrains and a sestet, ABBAABBA (for the 2 quatrains) then CDCDCD (sestet), volta between octave and sestet

ode

type of lyric poem that expresses feelings and thoughts on a person, idea, or event

Romantic poetry

a style of poetry that expresses emotion, imagination, and sentiment. Focuses on nature, individualism, often rejecting traditional religious beliefs

sublime

metaphysical poetry

lyric poem

short, expressive poem that conveys a speaker’s feelings or emotions. (fairly modern)

pastoral poem

idealizes rural life and the countryside
