Vasoconstriction
Alpha 1 adrenergic agonist
It affects the Blood Vessels, Urinary Bladder, & Iris (Sympathomimetic)
Phenylephrine
Alpha 1 adrenergic agonist drug that has no effect in HR, Used for hypertension and eye exam (to keep pupils dilated)
Action of Phenylephrine
It is a decongestant (Neozep, Bioflu, symdex) which causes vasoconstrictions, decreases blood flow which shricks the cells. It is also a vasopressor (Inc. TPR & BP)
Alpha 2 Adrenergic Agonist
Used in hypertension
Alpha 2 Adrenergic agonist
Affects the CNS nerve membrane (Decreased NE, weakeans SNS, PSNS response)
Also affects Pancreas (Decrease Insulin release → Hyperglycemia)
Clonidine (catapres)
An alpha 2 adrenergic agonist that crosses the BBB → Decreases Sympathetic effect, causing BP to decrease.
Methyldopa
Used in Hypertension
Beta 1 Adrenergic agonist
SNS response to the heart and Kidney
Beta 2 adrenergic agonist
Found in Smooth muscle tissues (lungs, uterus, and GIT) and metabolic organs (Liver and skeletal muscles)
Albuterol/ Salbutamol is used for
Used for bronchoconstriction (asthma) and hyperkalemia (SABA)
Side effect of Ventolin
Palpitation and tremors
Albuterol/Salbutamol
Ventolin
Terbutaline
Beta 2 Adrenergic agonist that is used to treat asthma & COPD. It is also a tocolytic agent used for delay of delivery for preterm baby.
Formoterol
It is a LABA used to prevent future attacks of asthma.
Prazosin
Alpha 1 adrenergic antagonist used to treat hypertension
Doxazosin & Terazosin
Alpha 1 Adrenergic Antagonist used to treat hypertension and empties the bladder for BPH
Alfuzosin & Tamsulosin
Emptying of bladder → BPH
Phentolamine
Alpha adrenergic antagonist that causes vasodilation. Used for hypertensive crisis due to Pheochromocytoma (Tumor in AM)
Beta Adrenergic blockers
Propanolol, Timolol, Nadolol
Propanolol
A beta-adrenergic blocker that is used for tachycardia in hyperthyroidism, stage fright, and is as prophylaxis in migraine.
Timolol
A beta-adrenergic blocker that is used for open-angle glaucoma, by decreasing the production of aqueous fluid- Dec. Intraocular pressure
It is also a prophylaxis for migraine (EYE DROP)
Nadolol
A Beta adrenergic blocker that is a DOC for angina + hypertension
Midodrine
Alpha Adrenergic agonist used to treat orthostatic hypotension
