Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)
The protocol within the TCP/IP suite used to resolve an IPv4 address to a hardware MAC address.
Local address resolution
When sending and receiving hosts are within the same broadcast domain or subnet.
ARP requests and ARP replies
These are used for local address resolution.
Default gateway
If the destination address is on a different subnet or on a remote network, the local host uses this to forward the packet.
ARP messaging
Used by routers for their Ethernet interfaces.
ARP messaging
Protocol used only with Ethernet.
IP address
Identifies each Network layer host interface.
Transmission of data
Takes place at the Physical and Data Link levels using the local or hardware/MAC address of the interface.
