Psychosis
Inability to differentiate between what is real and what is unreal.
Positive symptoms
Add something to normal functions, such as hallucinations and delusions.
Negative symptoms
Reflect a loss or diminution of normal functions.
Schizophrenia
Severe form of psychosis with symptoms including disorganized thinking, odd behavior, and impaired daily functioning.
Delusions
Ideas that an individual believes to be true but are highly unlikely or impossible.
Persecutory delusion
False belief that oneself or loved ones are being persecuted or conspired against.
Hallucinations
Perceptual experiences that occur without an actual stimulus.
Formal thought disorder
Significant problems with thinking, including loose associations and derailment.
Restricted affect
Severe reduction in or absence of emotional expression.
Avolition/asociality
Inability to initiate or persist at common, goal-directed activities.
Prodromal symptoms
Symptoms that occur before the acute phase of schizophrenia.
Schizoaffective disorder
A mix of schizophrenia and a mood disorder.
Schizophreniform disorder
Symptoms of schizophrenia present for less than 6 months.
Delusional disorder
Delusions lasting at least 1 month regarding real-life situations.
Genetic transmission
The hereditary passing of traits and disorders through genes.
Behavioral interventions
Psychological methods that aim to reinforce positive behaviors and reduce maladaptive behaviors.
Tardive dyskinesia
Neurological disorder involving involuntary movements of the tongue, face, mouth, or jaw.
