supporting cells that insulate & clean up neurons

what is the function of the soma/cell body?

contain nucleus (DNA) & machinery for life processing, receives chemicals & distinguishes them

what is the function of the axon hillock?

transmission of message & converts it to an electrical signal

what is the function of the axon?

transmission, conducts action potential

what is the function of the myelin sheath?

assists/insulates transmission; greater/thicker the axon, the greater the propagation of potentials

what are the function of the terminal buttons?

transmission, where the chemicals are secreted to the next neuron

what is the chemical synapse/synaptic cleft?

the physical distance between two neurons; CSF fills the space

what/where the presynaptic membrane?

the terminal button/end of the neuron

what/where is the postsynaptic membrane?

on the dendrite/cell body of postsynaptic neuron
